Message from Dr. Amit Garud, Orthopedic Specialist, Kalyan On 7 May, we celebrate World Athletics Day, and this year’s theme- “Athletics for a Better World”—reminds us that sports are not just about competition; they are essential for strong bones, healthy joints, and overall well‑being. Today, children and young adults spend more time on screens than on playgrounds. This shift is causing weak muscles, poor posture, vitamin D deficiency, and early joint problems. As an orthopedic doctor, I see these issues every day in my clinic. Athletics is one of the simplest and most powerful solutions. Running, jumping, stretching, and playing improve bone density, muscle strength, balance, and flexibility, reducing the risk of injuries and long‑term orthopedic concerns. Sports also build confidence, discipline, teamwork, and mental resilience—qualities every child needs. This World Athletics Day, let’s encourage our children to step outdoors, move more, and rediscover the joy of physical activity. An active childhood builds a stronger, healthier future.
